Zaheer Khan, a renowned pacer, has been appointed as the head coach of the Chennai Super Kings for the 2027 IPL season. This marks his inaugural position as a franchise head coach. The contract is for one year. The appointment follows Stephen Fleming’s 16-year tenure with the franchise, during which he won five IPL titles. CSK’s coaching structure has undergone a substantial transformation as a result of Zaheer’s appointment, as the franchise endeavours to rebuild after failing to qualify for the playoffs since 2024.
Prior to his appointment at CSK, Zaheer Khan served as a mentor to the Lucknow Super Giants until September 2025. From 2018 to 2022, he served as Mumbai Indians’ director of cricket operations before transitioning to the position of global head of development. His tenure in high-profile cricket roles encompasses several years. Zaheer collaborated with head coach Mahela Jayawardene during Mumbai’s title-winning campaigns in 2019 and 2020.

Jaffer’s endorsement underscored Zaheer Khan emotional intellect and interpersonal strengths as critical assets for the position. The former batter emphasised that Zaheer’s capacity to comprehend personalities and maintain decorum in high-pressure situations rendered him an ideal candidate for franchise leadership.

Jaffer also observed that Zaheer had been overdue for recognition at the highest coaching level, as he had previously played a role in the success of winning teams in support roles. The appointment symbolises a change in the organization’s leadership approach after more than a decade and a half under Fleming’s guidance, as it is the first Indian head coach in the franchise’s history.
