Praveen Kumar, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, has submitted an application to serve as a member of the BCCI minor selection committee. Many former cricket players, including the 39-year-old right-arm swing bowler who retired from all forms of cricket in 2018, have submitted their names to the BCCI after the organization opened five junior selector positions on August 24, 2026.
Praveen Kumar established himself as one of the nation’s more dependable swing bowlers in favourable circumstances by playing for India in six Test matches, sixty-eight One-Day Internationals, and ten Twenty20 Internationals throughout his career. He substantiated his decision to submit an application by referencing his experience as a selector for the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association and his participation in coaching since his retirement.
A new junior selection panel, with five positions available throughout the nation’s zones, will replace the current committee, which is being managed by S Sharath.
What motivated Praveen Kumar to submit an application for the junior selector position?
Praveen Kumar’s motivation is to return to the game after a period of absence. He appears to be confident in his ability to make a substantial impact at the national junior level due to his dual expertise in state-level selection at UPCA and coaching.
His playing record serves as an indispensable foundation. Kumar concluded the 2011 England tour with 15 wickets, including a return of 5/106 at Lord’s, thereby establishing himself as India’s leading wicket-taker. In addition, he captured 10 wickets in four games as India emerged victorious in the 2008 CB Series in Australia, demonstrating his capacity to perform in challenging circumstances that required discipline and technique. These performances underscore the level of expertise that a junior selector could contribute to the role in relation to international conditions and swing bowling.
Praveen Kumar gained a practical understanding of the state-level selection process by working in domestic cricket administration through UPCA prior to applying for a national position.
Has anyone else submitted an application for the BCCI associate selector positions?
Kumar is not the sole individual interested in becoming a member of the reorganised junior selection committee. In addition to Kumar, Ashish Winston Zaidi and Sudeep Tyagi, who represented India in four ODIs and one T20I from the Central Zone, have submitted applications.
