Vinay Kumar took over as Karnataka’s head coach on August 13, 2026, inheriting a squad that finished second in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy. The team is now preparing for their 2026-27 season start against Andhra on October 11, with substantial absences due to injury and national team commitments. Vinay Kumar provides a wealth of experience from his playing days, when he set a Ranji Trophy record for the most wickets taken by a speed bowler (442). He led Karnataka to successive Ranji Trophy victories in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
Vinay Kumar has worked as a talent scout for the Mumbai Indians and as a bowling coach for MI Emirates in the ILT20 after retiring in 2021, before assuming control of Hubli Tigers in the latest Maharaja T20 Trophy season. His appointment comes at a time when Karnataka faces many team issues for the Andhra game. Prasidh Krishna, V. Vyshak, and Vidwath Kaverappa are out due to injury. Additionally, K.L. Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, and R. Smaran will be absent for extended periods of time following his India and India-A call-ups.
Overall, it is an excellent opportunity for others to advance as cricketers,” Vinay Kumar stated, as reported by The Hindu.
Devdutt Padikkal is now playing against Australia-A and will miss the next three games due to a New Zealand visit. K.L. Rahul and the interim leader, R. Smaran is set to depart following the Andhra match for the New Zealand-A series, which begins on October 24. These departures will test the squad’s depth and force younger players to step up in a tough First Class environment.

The coaching staff will rely on veteran players who were part of Karnataka’s winning period. Karun Nair, Mayank Agarwal, and Shreyas Gopal, who won the Ranji Trophy under Vinay Kumar captaincy, remain in the squad. Kumar emphasised the importance of having these senior figures in the dressing room, citing their knowledge of what it takes to win trophies for the state.
