Wasim Jaffer, a former India opener, has applied for the position of senior national selector in men’s cricket after the BCCI declined to renew Ajit Agarkar’s contract. “Yes, I have applied for the job,” Jaffer told PTI.
Wasim Jaffer, 48, played 31 Tests and scored five hundreds, including doubles against the West Indies and Pakistan. His Test career lasted from 2000 to 2008, and he amassed 1944 runs at 34.10. Jaffer played only two ODIs in 2006.
However, Wasim Jaffer has a solid domestic cricket background. He is the biggest run-getter in Ranji Trophy history, as well as the player with the most centuries.
In total, he has amassed 19410 runs and 57 centuries in 260 first-class matches, averaging more than 50. He began his senior cricket career with Mumbai in the 1996-97 season and later retired from all cricket for Vidarbha.
If picked by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) that comprises Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape, Wasim Jaffer would have the maximum number of Test appearances among the candidates being considered for the chairman’s role, and would therefore be the chair.
Jaffer has played seven Tests more than Pragyan Ojha, who has 24 Test caps. Apart from Ojha, the other selectors currently are RP Singh, Ajay Ratra and Shiv Sunder Das.
