Morne Morkel, India’s fast bowling coach, has defended his team’s bowlers against rising criticism, citing the tough schedule and mental toll as major factors influencing performance. The bowling unit has been under fire following many high-scoring West Indies chases in the ongoing T20I series, with the conclusion set for Saturday, October 17 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Morne Morkel addressed the matter at a press conference held by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) in Bengaluru on Friday, October 16. He acknowledged the strain on social media and the expectations placed on India’s bowling attack, while emphasizing the human factor, which is frequently disregarded by detractors.
Mental weariness and a hectic schedule
Several squad members have faced an especially heavy travel load. Some players competed in the Asian Games before going straight into the West Indies series. Medal winners at the Asian Games had an additional commitment: they had to fly to Delhi to see Prime Minister Modi for a presentation before joining the squad for the decider in Bengaluru.
Morkel emphasized the importance of healing and rest for on-field performance.
He cited the fast transition from the Asian Games to the West Indies series, as well as the subsequent relocation to New Zealand, as examples of the squad’s demanding itinerary.
The bowling efforts in the series have sparked criticism from numerous sides. In the opening T20I, India’s bowlers held West Indies to 171 runs. However, the squad was unable to defend 249 in the second match, allowing 209 runs during a 223-run chase. at the fourth T20I at Hyderabad, the bowlers conceded 247 runs, with Mayank Yadav conceding 52 runs in four overs and Arshdeep Singh conceding 52 runs before withdrawing with a shoulder injury.
Despite recent setbacks, Morkel remains confident in his bowling team. He emphasized the importance of taking into account the mental strain and expectations placed on these players when evaluating their performance.
