Ajinkya Rahane is concerned about Hardik Pandya’s prolonged absence from international cricket, as it remains uncertain when the all-rounder will return. Hardik, who has been sidelined since the T20 World Cup final in March 2026, will be unable to participate in the upcoming white-ball matches against New Zealand or India as a result of a recent shin injury. The West Indies ODI series, which commences on September 27, will feature Nitish Kumar Reddy as a seam-bowling all-rounder in a series against Australia A.
Ajinkya Rahane spoke about the challenge of replacing an all-rounder of the calibre of Hardik Pandya before the West Indies series.
The seasoned striker acknowledged the opportunity that the situation presents to a talented young player like Reddy, as well as the challenge it presents.
Reddy’s opportunity to exhibit his adaptability
Nitish Kumar Reddy was initially included in the Asian Games 2026 roster; however, he has been transferred to the ODI squad for the West Indies series. The BCCI selection committee abruptly removed Reddy from the Asian Games contingent and included him in the white-ball team that faced the West Indies. Shubman Gill will serve as the team’s captain for the three-match series, while KL Rahul will serve as the vice-captain.
Reddy and Hardik are not comparable for the following reasons:
The recent performances of Reddy have served as an incentive for his promotion to the ODI setup. The all-rounder made an impression with the ball during the T20I series against Afghanistan, capturing six wickets in three games. His impressive bowling performance and successful recovery from injuries during that series indicated that he was adequately prepared for the upcoming match against the West Indies.

Ajinkya Rahane emphasised that it is not appropriate to draw direct comparisons between Reddy and Hardik, as each individual contributes distinct assets to the team. The selection committee’s confidence in Reddy’s ability to contribute to the batting and bowling disciplines of the ODI format is evident in his promotion.
