In an effort to halt a 34-year hiatus for the Ranji Trophy, Punjab is seeking to enhance its red-ball setup with experience. Umesh Yadav, a 38-year-old Indian pacer, has been recruited by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) as a guest player for the 2026–2027 domestic season. This is a significant development.
The PCA has secured its first guest player, Umesh Yadav, marking a debut for the organization. After receiving a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA), the experienced bowler will represent Punjab in the upcoming Ranji Trophy season.
Umesh has participated in nine Twenty20 Internationals, 75 One-Day Internationals, and 55 Tests for India. He provides the Punjab setup with a wealth of local and international expertise, in addition to capturing the Ranji Trophy with Vidarbha.
Amarjit Mehta, the president of the PCA, confirmed Umesh Yadav’s decision and underscored the pacer’s qualifications.
Punjab is optimistic that Umesh’s proficiency will allow them to compete for the Ranji Trophy this season, as they have not won it since 1992. Mehta clarified that the team’s red-ball aspirations were considered prior to making the decision.
Furthermore, he believes that Umesh’s knowledge could be beneficial to Punjab’s younger players throughout the season.
Umesh Yadav will augment Punjab’s pace attack.
Punjab’s decision to sign Umesh Yadav is also influenced by concerns regarding the availability of their standard fast-bowling options. Punjab may not have sufficient speed bowlers for the domestic season as a result of the anticipated involvement of Gurnoor Brar and Arshdeep Singh with the Indian team.
Mehta clarified that Umesh’s signing was influenced by the necessity to strengthen the bowling department in the absence of their pacers departing for India.
Umesh Yadav represented India in the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval in June 2023. Despite his age of 38, the pacer is expected to participate in Punjab’s Ranji Trophy training in the near future.
The decision to include Umesh in the team was endorsed by Amit Uniyal, the coach of Punjab, who emphasised his bowling experience in Indian conditions.
Uniyal clarified that Umesh Yadav’s selection does not guarantee that he will participate in every game, as the team’s composition will ultimately determine the result.
