Shreyas Iyer openly discusses his batting philosophy, claiming that rather than following a predefined formula, he tailors his plan to the specific needs of each situation. In an interview with JioStar, Iyer explained how he uses bowler aggression, field placements, and powerplay field limits.
Shreyas Iyer, who captained India in Twenty20 Internationals and currently serves as vice-captain in One-Day Internationals, has had a situation-first approach since his early days in local cricket. He went on to remark that once he is at ease at the crease, he focuses on setting the stage for the batsmen who follow him.
During an innings, how does Shreyas Iyer analyse bowling strategies?
Iyer described a rigorous methodology to crease observation that includes field placement analysis and prediction of the bowling side’s strategy. According to him, bowlers frequently try to establish control early in an innings, particularly in one-day cricket, where the fielding captain prioritises collecting wickets quickly.
He claims that by understanding this relationship, he may take advantage of the bowler’s aggression. Shreyas Iyer asserted that instead of being put on the back foot, he can shift the momentum in his favour by recognising when a bowler is aiming to get on top of him.
How has Shreyas Iyer been performing in the lead-up to this interview?
Shreyas Iyer’s comments about his IPL 2026 performances as a Punjab Kings player are crucial. He scored 309 runs at an average of 61.80 in eight games during the competition, including an unbeaten 71 off 36 balls against the Delhi Capitals.
His improved performance in the 2026 Indian Premier League can be due to a more aggressive batting technique and a tough training routine that includes more than 300 balls per practice session. The situation-based perspective he described in the JioStar interview appears to be consistent with these tendencies.
